Billie's Kiss - Elizabeth Knox
I had to persevere with this one, which is set in the Western Isles of Scotland at the turn of the 19th/20th Century. I did finish it, but I don't thik I'll be trying any more Elizabeth Know novels - they just don't have enough detail for me.

Hi Mary, I think you shouldn't totally give up on Elizabeth Knox because she writes a completely different novel every time (mind you Black Oxen was one that many, many people struggled with, so don't try that one). Try The Vintner's Luck. I have to admit I didn't enjoy either Billie's Kiss OR The Vintner's Luck but many, many people in her home country of New Zealand, where I come from, just ADORE the latter, and it's won a couple of awards - our major fiction award and a prestigious new Australian/NZ fiction award.
