Death of Kings – Bernard Cornwell

Volume 6 in Bernard Cornwell’s excellent retelling of the story of Alfred the Great and the birth of the kingdom of England, through the eyes of Dane-raised Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Set at the turn of the 9th/10th century, Death of Kings describes the events that follow the death of King Alfred, and the eventual war brought by the Danes of the Danelaw in to the Christian kingdoms of East Anglia, Mercia and mighty Wessex.

By the end of the book, Uhtred is still a long way from reclaiming his right to be Lord of Bebbanburg, far to the north of the Danelaw.
