Snowdrops – A. D. Miller

A snowdrop we learn, is Moscow slang for “A corpse that lies buried or hidden in the winter snows, emerging only in the thaw.”.

An ambitious City lawyer, Nicholas Platt has taken a posting to Moscow on the promise of the fast track to partnership (a not uncommon Faustian pact). After four years of project finance Moscow-style and well versed in the ways of modern Russia, he meets Masha and ends up embroiled in dodgy deals in both his private and professional life.

‘Forbidden,’ he said, ‘only means expensive.’

Very, very good.
