Summer Light – Andrew Stevenson

Andrew Stevenson’s account of a summer spent hiking and cycling across Norway sounds idyllic. I wonder (fear?) how much it has changed since he and (then) new partner Annabel made their journey in the mid 1990s – there were several mentions of tunnels due for completion that would change the route completely.

Even though the final chapter, Spitsbergen, felt somewhat tacked on, for me Andrew’s journey to the Arctic circumnavigating Svalbard served as his swan song to Norway, and suggested that his transition from a lone adventurer to one half of a couple would be more successful second time round. I hope so – and I hope that he still maintains his mature relationship with first wife, Kirsten.

Norway’s now on my list of places to visit, both for walking and “Arctic-ing”.
