The Very Thought Of You – Rosie Alison

Mainly set in World War II, the overarching theme in The Very Thought Of You is those we fall in love with over a lifetime, through choice or not. Key characters are Anna Sands, an evacuee from London to a Yorkshire stately home, and Thomas and Elizabeth Ashton, the estranged lord and lady of the estate who are both crippled in their own ways – one (mainly) physically, the other emotionally.

A speedy, enjoyable read, but I wouldn’t have said strong enough to be shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction.
