Into The Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest – Wade Davis

A birthday present from TJBR, Corrie Craggie was a good place to read Into The Silence, Wade Davis’ account of the horrors of World War I and the consequences for George Mallory and the other wounded men whose passion for the mountains and determination to climb Mount Everest took them on three tortuous treks through Tibet in the early 1920s.

Published in the year that marks the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest, there’s a final chapter on whether Mallory made it or not, and a pretty unpleasant account of the discovery of his body in 1999.
