Herefordshire Week 234: Tuesday 18 – Monday 24 June 2024

A week in Walton on the Naze. A lot of sunshine – hurrah! – and a lot of reading – double hurrah!

BUT NO TEAPOT!! Seriously Park Resorts ….. Naze Marine is a classic seaside caravan park and you don’t provide A Teapot in your caravan rentals!!!

Tuesday was our first full day in Walton. Thankfully Naze Marine is proving to be quiet on weekdays and there’s no dawn chorus so we slept in. We walked along the Prom to Frinton on Sea, checking out the beach huts en route. Coffee and brunch at Bird  & Bean’s new branch in the old Lloyds Bank, a mooch around the shops, then back to Walton via Pole Barn Lane, and a meander through town (aka checking out the offerings in Terry’s).

A quiet afternoon back at the caravan, with a short stroll via the Backwaters to check the hut. A relief to find it still standing and pretty much water tight. We also needed to retrieve the cafetière as the van provides neither that, nor, incredibly, a tea pot.

Reading with a “pot” of tea (aka the Pyrex jug with a saucer for a lid) segued into crossword with beer and crisps, then a bit of downloaded telly before polishing off the M&S goodies for tea.

Phil headed back to Witham on Wednesday and I returned to the hut to give it a bit of an airing and a spring clean. And then settled on the sea front with the latest Robert Galbraith to enjoy reading with the sun, sea and fresh air.

Back to the beach hut on Thursday, cloudier and cooler in the morning than all the forecast reckons but sunny as promised all afternoon. Tea and treats from Hipkins Cafe morning, lunchtime and afternoon. Finished The Running Grave and the LRB, and P and I made good progress with the cryptic crossword. Speedy turn around back at the van then over to M&R’s for a lovely evening.

Friday started sunny. P headed off to Witham, I headed back to the beach hut. Set myself up on the prom with a chair and a book, a jug of water and a glass – lovely.

Late morning, with itchy feet, I walked into town to buy the tea pot we’d spotted in Terry’s – £4 well spent – then back to my beachfront reading.

Naze Marine noticably busier as the weekend got underway.

Met Phil at the station and we returned to the van via M&S for bargains and treats, including G&Ts and salt & pepper cashews. Tea, telly, bed.

Saturday commenced cloudier and cooler, so we indulged in a nice leisurely start, with people in the nearby caravans doing similarly. We strolled into town, discovering the delights of The Nose bookshop and cafe (more “Wivenhoe” than “Walton” if you know what I mean) en route to Lilley’s bakery where we stocked up on bread and cakes, and a cheeky Cornish pasty for P. Back to base to pick up supplies then sea wall and the field footpath to Hipkins Beach for another sunny day at The Hut. After dinner, a stroll along the sea wall as the sun set. Long days, short nights.

Another scorchio day on Sunday. Another day at the beach hut. To Pearl of Samui for a super tasty Thai to round off our week in Walton on the Naze.

Heatwave ongoing on Monday. We returned the cafetière to the beach hut, checked out of Naze Marine and drove to Witham.
